South Africa faces an unsettled start to the week as showers and thundershowers spread across much of the northern and eastern interior. Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Free State and North West can all expect thundery conditions early on, with the South African Weather Service flagging a warning for severe thunderstorms. The coastal provinces are more mixed, with rain showers along the Western Cape and Eastern Cape before drier, clearer weather takes hold midweek. Conditions ease across most regions by the weekend.

The most notable extremes sit in the north, where Mpumalanga climbs to 32C early in the week and North West reaches 31C. KwaZulu-Natal stays warm and humid, with overnight lows near 22C. Cooler air arrives later, dropping temperatures into the low twenties inland, while morning fog affects parts of the Northern Cape and North West.

• Mpumalanga: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south-east. It will be hot in the Lowveld.
• North West: Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers over the extreme south-eastern parts. It will be windy over the eastern parts.
