Jetour South Africa has officially set the payload capacity of its T2 range at 475 kg, following concerns raised by the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA). The company says the revised figure uses the calculation common among manufacturers in South Africa. This gives local buyers a payload number they can compare directly with those of other brands.

How the Jetour T2 payload was calculated
When the T-Series launched locally in October 2025, Jetour International calculated the original payload as the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) less the Mass in Running Order (MIRO). MIRO is the vehicle’s mass in running condition, typically including standard equipment, operating fluids and fuel, and a driver.
After concerns about the T-Series payload were first raised, Jetour South Africa found that this is not the formula commonly used by OEMs in South Africa. As a result, it did not give a like-for-like basis for comparison. The revised figure is calculated as GVM less the tare weight. Tare is the vehicle’s unladen mass. It excludes the driver but includes standard equipment and 10 litres of fuel, before any passengers, luggage or cargo are added.
Independent testing and local weigh-ins
TÜV NORD, an independent German testing, inspection and certification organisation, carried out a braking performance and brake efficiency assessment of the T2’s payload capacity, based on the vehicle’s GVM and tare weights.
Jetour South Africa also held its own formal weighing exercises across the T2 range. These took place in the presence of the AA and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS). The company says the weigh-in results match the GVM and tare weight calculations, which further confirms the revised figures.
Jetour T2 payload figures by variant
The locally tested T2 Odyssey 2.0TD recorded a payload of 500 kg, 25 kg above the claimed 475 kg. The T2 Xplora 2.0TD, also listed as the T2 Explora, recorded 479 kg, 4 kg above the claim. The T2 i-DM, listed as the T2 PHEV 1.5T, recorded 478 kg, 3 kg above the claim. On the strength of these results, Jetour South Africa has set the payload at 475 kg for every T2 variant.
Licensing solution for Jetour T2 owners
Jetour South Africa says it is prioritising a licensing solution for T2 customers in consultation with the NRCS. Details will be communicated directly to each customer. “We understand the urgency of the matter and are working to resolve it as a matter of priority,” the company said.
