Of all the teams in the world – and all the Sevens players on the World Series circuit – it had to be the USA and a last-grasp Perry Baker try that snapped South Africa’s 36-match winning streak.
With the 7-12 win over South Africa, the Eagles secured their spot in Sunday’s Cup quarter-finals, alongside South Africa, Australia, Samoa, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji and Ireland.
Both theams had won two from two in their Pool A matches, beating Canada and Kenya respectively. South Africa can rarely be accused of taking teams lightly – second longest Sevens winning streak in tow or not – so it was always going to take something special to snap that streak.
And Baker’s try was special. Set up by a slick Dmontae Noble offload, the speedster did what he does best to secure the win against the World Series leaders.
