Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) recorded its strongest monthly sales performance in September 2026, selling 15 366 vehicles and increasing its market share to 24.9%. The figure is up from the 14 146 units sold in September 2025, with demand rising across both passenger and commercial vehicle segments, confirming Toyota’s position as the country’s biggest-selling vehicle maker.
The result comes amid continued economic uncertainty and global market volatility. According to naamsa’s latest new vehicle sales report, total domestic sales in South Africa reached 61 645 units in September, up 12.7% compared to September 2025.
Corolla Cross leads Toyota passenger sales
The locally manufactured Corolla Cross led the passenger line-up with 1 964 sales. The Starlet and Starlet Cross contributed 1 573 and 1 578 units respectively, while the Urban Cruiser added 1 328 units. The Fortuner registered 908 sales, and the Vitz (949 units) and RAV4 (290 units) both improved month on month.
Lexus sold 98 vehicles. The NX was the brand’s top seller with 32 units, followed by the GX (26) and LX (23). The RX recorded 10 sales, matching its July figure, and two customers took delivery of the all-electric RZ.
Hilux keeps Toyota ahead in commercials
Toyota held its lead in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment, with the Hilux contributing 3 769 sales. The Hiace added 617 units and the Land Cruiser Pick-Up 419 units. In the people-mover category, the Coaster recorded 70 sales and the Quantum Bus 91, while the Quantum Panel Van rose from 67 units in August to 76 units in September.
Hino, fleet and parts operations
Hino recorded combined sales of 406 units across the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segments, and the Fleet division served 2 437 customers through the dealer network. Toyota’s domestic parts operations distributed just under two million parts pieces during the month, while export volumes reached 339 851 units.
Toyota outlook for the final quarter
Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, said growth across passenger, commercial and fleet segments “demonstrates the value of offering products that meet a broad spectrum of mobility needs.” Looking ahead, he added that the company would remain focused on “supporting our dealer network and sustaining the momentum achieved across our brands” as it enters the final quarter of the year.
