Elia Kazan’s 1954 drama On The Waterfront follows Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando), a former fighter who could have been a contender. He now works for Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) on a gang-ridden dockside. After Terry lures a rebellious worker to his death, guilt sets in, and the dead man’s sister, Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), shows him how low he has fallen.
When his brother Charley the Gent (Rod Steiger) is murdered for refusing to kill him, Terry sets out to bring down Friendly’s underworld empire. Budd Schulberg wrote the story of his redemption. The Columbia Pictures release won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Brando took the Oscar for Best Actor.
