Jameel Motors South Africa, the official importer and distributor of Changan, has added a second range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) to the brand’s local line-up in the form of the compact Deepal S05. It sits below the larger Deepal S07 in size and price.
The five-door model was designed in Changan’s studio in Turin, Italy. Its styling includes narrow LED headlamps, frameless door pillars and hidden rectangular door handles. Chelsy Pinto, General Manager: Marketing & Product of Jameel Motors, says the S05 “brings together the appeal of electric driving and the reassurance of a petrol-powered range extender”.
Deepal S05 powertrain and range
A single rear electric motor produces 160 kW and 320 N.m and drives the rear wheels only. Energy comes from a 27.28 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that gives an electric-only range of 175 km. A 1.5-litre petrol engine rated at 72 kW and 125 N.m acts only as a generator for the motor and battery, lifting total range to more than 1 000 km.
Claimed performance is 0-100 km/h in under eight seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h. The battery has a preheating function and accepts AC charging as well as DC fast charging, which takes it from 30 to 80% in 20 minutes. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability lets the high-voltage battery power or charge external electrical devices.
Cabin technology, safety and space
Inside is a 15.4-inch “Sunflower” rotating touchscreen with navigation, voice control, Bluetooth and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, linked to 14 speakers. An augmented-reality head-up display powered by a Snapdragon 8155 chip projects a 50-inch image. Suspension uses MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link rear.
Standard Level 2 driver assistance covers adaptive cruise control with lane centring and traffic jam assist, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, along with face recognition, fatigue detection and a 540-degree camera. Heated and ventilated front seats are trimmed in microfibre leather, and a fixed 1.9 m panoramic sunroof is fitted. The SUV measures 4 620 mm long on a 2 880 mm wheelbase, weighs 1 847 kg and offers 464 litres of luggage space.
Price and warranty in South Africa
Colour choices are Moonlight White, Ganymede Grey, Mercury Silver, Deep Space Black and Starry Blue, with black or orange interiors. The Deepal S05 costs R699 000 including VAT and comes with a five-year/90 000 km service plan, a five-year/150 000 km warranty and an eight-year/150 000 km battery warranty, with an optional maintenance plan. It will be available at Changan dealers from the first week of November.
