- Parkers names Ranger PHEV Pickup of the Year 2027.
- Award announced on 5 November 2026.
- 281 PS and 697 Nm combined.
- Tows up to 3.5 tonnes.
- Electric range of up to 27 miles.
Announced on 5 November 2026, the award recognises the Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid as a pickup that aims to make electrification practical for drivers who still need to work, tow and travel beyond the range of a typical daily commute.
Parkers described the Ranger PHEV as “the most complete pickup on sale” because it adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain without giving up the capability expected from a diesel pickup. The judges also noted that tax changes in the UK have made many double-cab pickups more expensive to run as company vehicles. Lower emissions from the hybrid can reduce the Benefit-in-Kind bill for a company-car driver compared with a diesel Ranger.
Ranger PHEV power, towing and payload
Petrol and electric power combine for 281 PS and 697 Nm of torque, the highest torque output of any production Ranger. Towing capacity is up to 3.5 tonnes, matching the Ranger 3.0-litre V6 diesel, and maximum payload is up to 1,071 kg depending on trim, equipment and accessories.
Off-road ability is retained too. The hybrid keeps the same 800 mm wading depth as other Ranger models, along with the ground clearance needed on farms, worksites and rough tracks.
Battery packaging and electric range
Ford placed the battery beneath the load bed, so it does not take away usable load area. On a full charge, the plug-in pickup offers an all-electric range of up to 27 miles under WLTP testing of the XLT series. When charge runs low, the petrol engine and electric motor work together, and four EV drive modes let drivers choose when battery charge is used or saved.
Ford Pro Power Onboard and the verdict
Ford Pro Power Onboard is available on the model and supplies up to 6.9 kW of electrical power through outlets in the cab and load bed. Once the drive battery is depleted, the petrol engine can take over to keep power available, which can reduce the need to carry a separate generator.
“The tax change hit pickup buyers hard, and the Ranger plug-in hybrid is one of very few genuine ways out of it,” said Tom Webster, Head of Content at Parkers. He added that Ford “hasn’t traded anything away”.
For UK buyers, the result is a pickup that can serve as a work vehicle during the week and a family or leisure vehicle at the weekend, with electric driving available for shorter, regular journeys.
