Employees at the Silverton Assembly Plant and the Struandale Engine Plant, together with dealers across the country, spent the 2026 Global Caring Month on work covering food security, education, disability support, youth opportunity and care for children and families. Each project addressed a need identified locally.
Held every September, Global Caring Month is the annual employee volunteering initiative of Ford Philanthropy. In South Africa it runs under a programme called Ford Building Together. Duduzile Nxele, Corporate Communications Manager at Ford South Africa, described it as “a chance to put care into action, alongside the people and organisations who understand their communities best.”
Silverton plant and Policy Team projects
Volunteers from Silverton established and tended food gardens, improved classrooms and care facilities, and provided equipment and practical support to people with disabilities. Other activities dealt with youth careers, health and gender-based violence awareness, along with improvements at children’s homes and community facilities. The Policy Team, meanwhile, visited Botho Botjha Training Centre in the Vaal, where it upgraded the sick bay and other facilities, worked in the garden and donated wheelchairs and first aid kits.
Struandale Engine Plant work in Gqeberha
In Gqeberha and surrounding areas, initiatives with Love Story and the Association of Persons with Disabilities centred on food security, gardening and entrepreneurship. Bet Sheekoom House of Restoration for Women in Crisis received essential supplies, while Siyaphambili Disable Community Project gained facility improvements, water infrastructure and community meals. Emsengeni Primary School and Coega Primary School saw classroom, corridor and ablution upgrades plus learning resources, and Northwood Children’s Hospice received educational supplies.
Ford dealer projects and food drive
Dealers took the programme into their own areas. Hatfield Motor Group worked on vegetable gardens and shade structures at Johannesburg Children’s Home, CMH Ford Umhlanga supplied football equipment to rural schools through Namenyi Project Hope, and NMI Ford N1 City backed surfing equipment and coaching through The Kamvalethu Foundation. Human Auto Bloemfontein provided meal kits for more than 220 families with ENGO Free State, and Sentracor supported a feeding scheme serving around 500 people.
Through the Global Dealer Food Drive, dealers gathered 33 962.05 kilograms of food, and a further 2 454.35 kilograms came from Ford’s internal collection, for a combined 36 416.4 kilograms. Human Auto Welkom led with 8 268 kilograms, ahead of CMH Kempster Ford Umhlanga with 7 500 kilograms and Nelspruit Ford with 2 700 kilograms. The Welkom dealer’s hampers were estimated to have provided food assistance to 4 218 people. Videos of several projects, including Coega Primary School and Johannesburg Children’s Home, are available on the Ford South Africa newsroom.
