Dealers and media gathered in Johannesburg for the first MG Tech Day and Premium SUV Family launch, hosted by MG Motor South Africa. On display were the all-new QS flagship, the HS HYBRID+ and HS PHEV, and two new normally aspirated ZS Pro models.
Founded in Britain in 1924, the brand points to the 1931 EX120 ‘Magic Midget’, the first 750 cc car to exceed 100 mph. It has delivered more than one million vehicles in Europe and the UK since 2021 and sold more than 300 000 units in Europe in 2025, more than 180 000 of them new-energy vehicles.
MG QS seven-seat flagship SUV
Joining the South African line-up at the start of 2027, the QS is a seven-seater with three full-size rows on a 2 915 mm wheelbase. Buyers will choose between 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The SUV also brings intelligent hydraulic suspension with continuous damping control, Bose audio and the most comprehensive version of MG Pilot, the company’s suite of driver assistance systems, yet fitted to one of its SUVs. “It showcases the best and most advanced technology we have ever fitted to a vehicle,” said Jack Wang, Vice President of MG Motor South Africa.
MG HS HYBRID+ and PHEV powertrains
For the C-segment HS, the HYBRID+ system now uses a liquid-cooled 1.83 kWh battery, giving a longer electric-only range and smoother transitions between its eight propulsion modes. The plug-in hybrid carries a 24.7 kWh battery for up to 120 km of electric driving (WLTP), with higher peak power, and can be charged at home or on the go.
First customer deliveries of both models in South Africa are expected in January 2027.
MG ZS Pro 1.5 and future batteries
A normally aspirated petrol engine now joins the ZS Pro range. Paired with a next-generation CVT, it uses 6.7 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle, and equipment includes LED lights, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 360-degree camera.
Looking further ahead, the company outlined battery work under way with parent SAIC, including new chemistry for greater capacity and range, better performance in very low and high temperatures, and smaller packs mounted lower for improved road holding.
Availability of new MG models
Pricing was not announced. Further details on the range are available at www.mgmotor.co.za, with the QS and the new HS models due in South African showrooms from early 2027.
