Judges at the 2026 What Car? Used Car of the Year Awards have picked the current-generation Volkswagen Passat as the best used hybrid in the UK. The estate was praised for its driving manners, refinement and interior, as well as its electric-only range and its value for money when bought nearly new.
What Car? verdict on the Passat eHybrid
Mark Pearson, What Car? Used Cars Editor, said the plug-in eHybrid version “is not only smooth and refined and a great long-distance cruiser, but it can also run on electric-only power for up to 82 miles.” He added that rear passengers have plenty of room and that the boot is large.
Pearson called it “an exceptional all-rounder” and singled out its value when bought nearly new. The awards select one car in each body style category that offers the factors people look for in a used car.
Passat award tally in the UK
The win comes less than a month after the model was named Best Used Hybrid Estate at the What Car? Electric Car Awards. It is the 14th honour for the current generation since its UK launch in April 2024.
Earlier wins include Estate of the Year, Tow Car of the Year and a Safety Award at the 2025 What Car? Awards, the overall Tow Car of the Year title at the Caravan and Motorhome Club Tow Car Awards, and Estate Car of the Year at the 2026 Professional Driver QSI Awards.
Volkswagen Passat space and technology
Buyers can choose petrol or plug-in hybrid power. Luggage capacity is up to 690 litres with the rear seats up and 2,027 litres with them folded, while the braked trailer load limit is 2,000 kg and the tow bar load limit is 90 kg.
Equipment includes Digital Cockpit Pro, the IDA voice assistant, driver assistance systems, massage seats, climate control and ambient lighting. A head-up display is standard on the Black Edition only.
