Smooth Criminal is a song written and composed by Michael Jackson, produced by Quincy Jones and co-produced by Jackson. It comes from the album Bad, released on 31 August 1987, and was issued as a single on 21 October 1988. The single reached No. 1 in Spain and the Netherlands and the Top 10 in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland.
The short film, directed by Colin Chilvers and shot mainly in Los Angeles, was the centerpiece of the feature film Moonwalker and introduced Jackson’s anti-gravity lean. It drew partly on Fred Astaire’s Girl Hunt Ballet number from The Band Wagon and was named Best Video at the BRIT Awards, the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the People’s Choice Awards. It was the sixth of nine short films made for Bad.
