On 14 September 2026, BYD Company Limited became a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The company says it will further integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into its corporate strategy and operations.
BYD describes the move as a milestone for the company in the field of sustainable development.
What the United Nations Global Compact does
Established in 2000, the UNGC calls itself the world’s largest international organisation dedicated to advancing corporate sustainability, and it first introduced the concept of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). Its work centres on helping businesses build the Ten Principles of the Global Compact into their operations and strategic development.
The body counts over 25 000 enterprises across more than 160 countries among its members. It aims to support the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through responsible corporate action and partnerships.
BYD sustainability targets and DREAMS strategy
The carmaker, which describes itself as the world’s largest new energy vehicle enterprise, operates in more than 100 countries and regions. Guided by its vision of “Cool the Earth By 1°C”, it became the first automaker in the world to halt production of purely fuel-powered vehicles in 2022. It has also set a goal of carbon neutrality across the whole value chain by 2045.
In 2025 the company unveiled its DREAMS sustainability strategy. This rests on six pillars, namely Decarbonization, Revolution, Equity, Alliance, Moral Integrity and Shared Value.
BYD deliveries and charity fund in 2025
Deliveries reached 4 600 000 new energy vehicles in 2025, which BYD says brought a carbon emission reduction of 46.6 million tonnes, equivalent to planting 776 million trees. Separately, the firm has set up a RMB 3 billion charity fund that supports education, university scholarships and the popularisation of new energy vehicle technology.
What BYD commits to next
Founded in 1994 as a rechargeable battery maker, BYD now covers automobiles, rail transit, new energy and electronics, with over 30 industrial parks in China, the United States, Canada, Japan, Brazil, Hungary and India. Going forward, it says it will observe the principles and requirements of the UNGC and work with its value chain partners towards a broader set of sustainable development goals.
