Changan has added its first plug-in hybrid to the UK line-up, where the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV joins the all-electric Deepal S05 and Deepal S07. The compact SUV is designed to drive as an electric car first, with a 172 kW motor turning the front wheels in almost all conditions and a 1.5-litre petrol engine working mainly as a generator.
Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV powertrain and drivetrain
Total system output is 190 kW (258 PS / 255 bhp), enough for 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds. The 63 kW four-cylinder engine feeds the drive motor or tops up an 18.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and a wet clutch links it to the wheels only when full power is requested above 60 mph, typically for a few seconds at a time. Braked towing capacity is 1,600 kg with the optional detachable tow bar.
Ken Pendlebury, Group Chief Engineer, Powertrain, Changan Europe, said that “whether the battery is full or running low, the car responds like an electric car.” Three energy settings, EV, Hybrid Auto and Hybrid Manual, let the driver decide when battery charge is used or saved.
Range, efficiency and charging
On the WLTP cycle the SUV covers up to 62 miles on electricity and up to 648 miles combined. Weighted combined consumption is 139.2 mpg, falling to 52.3 mpg with a depleted battery, while CO2 emissions are 47 g/km. Unusually for a plug-in hybrid, it accepts DC rapid charging at up to 55 kW, taking the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in around 15 minutes, and AC charging at up to 11 kW.
Design, cabin and safety
Styled in Turin, Italy, the body carries over the Deepal S05’s frameless doors, flush handles and 0.29 Cd drag coefficient. It measures 4,598 mm long on a 2,880 mm wheelbase, and the boot holds 552 litres, or 1,310 litres with the rear seats folded. Inside sits a 15.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the model carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating with 17 driver assistance systems.
Price and warranty in the UK
UK buyers can choose the Pro at £32 990 or the better-equipped Max at £34 990, which adds a head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats and a 14-speaker sound system. Cover runs to seven years or 100,000 miles for the vehicle and eight years or 124,000 miles for the battery, with sales through Changan UK’s network of nearly 60 dealer sites.
