Judges at the 2026 Auto Express Used Car Awards in the United Kingdom handed Hyundai three titles, making it the most successful manufacturer at this year’s event. Alongside the overall prize, the IONIQ 5 claimed Best Used Electric Car, and the TUCSON was named Best Used Mid-Size SUV.
How the Auto Express Used Car Awards work
The awards identify the best second-hand buys across 13 categories, from city cars to large SUVs. Judges weigh up how each model was rated when new, real-world feedback from owners through the Auto Express Driver Power survey, and how used values have held up. Five category winners are then shortlisted and ranked to decide the overall Used Car of the Year.
IONIQ 5 range, charging and design
Launched a little over five years ago, the electric crossover was also named overall Car of the Year by Auto Express when new, in 2021. This time the judges pointed to its concept car-inspired design and its spacious cabin, which carries plenty of technology.
Every version covers more than 200 miles on a charge, and later models can manage over 300 miles. Its 800V architecture allows a 10 to 80 per cent charge in under 20 minutes on a suitable rapid charger.
Rich Ingram, Deputy Editor of Auto Express, called it “a brilliant all-rounder that shows just how good a used electric car can be.”
Hyundai TUCSON adds another used car award
The SUV was named Best Mid-Size SUV in the publication’s New Car Awards four years in a row, from 2021 to 2024. Judges praised its refinement, comfortable ride and performance, a cabin that seats five adults and a generous boot. Petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains are offered, with four-wheel drive also available.
Earlier honours include Best Used Family SUV at the 2025 What Car? Used Car Awards and Best Used Car Over £18 000 at the 2025 Scottish Car of the Year Awards. An all-new TUCSON was revealed at the Paris Motor Show earlier this month.
