- D-Max towed caravan for RSG campaign.
- 1.8-tonne caravan, roughly a hippo’s weight.
- More than 4 500 km covered.
- Trip lasted almost three weeks.
- Ended a day before Heritage Day.
An Isuzu D-Max has towed a 1.8-tonne caravan more than 4 500 km from Cape Town to Johannesburg as part of Radio Sonder Grense’s (RSG) Kultuur Karavaan campaign. The weight is roughly that of an adult hippopotamus.
The journey took place during Heritage Month. It started in Sea Point, Cape Town, and lasted almost three weeks, with the RSG team travelling through six small towns before ending in Johannesburg a day before Heritage Day.
Purpose of the RSG Kultuur Karavaan
The campaign was created to connect RSG with its listeners in smaller communities and to uncover stories that reflect the diversity of Afrikaans culture across South Africa. Amor Swanepoel, Marketing Manager at RSG, said its primary objective was to gather stories from the audience and gain deeper insight into Afrikaans culture and the communities listeners call home.
Swanepoel said Isuzu was selected because the team needed a vehicle capable of handling the demanding conditions often found on the backroads connecting smaller towns.
Weather and detours on the route
The 3.0-litre D-Max towed the caravan for the entire journey, through significant changes in elevation, strong winds and challenging weather. Severe rain and strong winds led to tunnel closures, forcing the team onto longer detours over gravel and muddy roads.
“Despite these conditions, the Isuzu handled the journey without any issues while towing the caravan the entire way,” said Swanepoel.
Isuzu D-Max towing and off-road features
The trip tested the bakkie’s towing stability and off-road capability. Rough Terrain Mode is standard on all 4×4 derivatives and works with the Traction Control System to help maintain traction on challenging surfaces. The vehicle also carried four people throughout: the driver, a technical operator and two presenters.
Iviwe Poti, senior manager strategic communications at Isuzu, said towing a 1.8-tonne caravan over more than 4 500 km, including through difficult weather and road conditions, is a demanding test. For RSG, the D-Max’s towing capacity was an important part of making the campaign possible.
