BMW has revealed the fifth-generation X5. It is the first BMW model engineered to support five drive systems, including hydrogen, across its global line-up. In the UK, the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive is priced from £85 375 OTR, and the market launch of the electric, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions starts in spring 2027.
The X5 was first launched in 1999. The new model is offered with an all-electric powertrain for the first time, as the BMW iX5, alongside a diesel with 48V mild hybrid technology and plug-in hybrid derivatives. Some global markets will also get a petrol variant. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the brand’s first hydrogen-powered production vehicle, will complete the line-up with a range of up to 466 miles.

BMW iX5 range and charging
The iX5 60 xDrive uses two electric motors for a system output of 578 hp and a range of up to 525 miles (WLTP). Its sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology uses taller cylindrical cells, 120 mm high, in a 141 kWh (net) battery with a cell-to-pack design. The car runs on 800-volt architecture, charges at up to 460 kW DC and supports bidirectional charging. A fully electric M Performance model will join the line-up later.
Plug-in hybrid and diesel X5 models
The X5 50e xDrive and X5 M60e xDrive pair a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with a new turbocharger and a 197 hp electric motor. A 26.5 kWh usable battery gives up to 63 miles (WLTP) of electric range. The M60e produces 612 hp and 800 Nm, and reaches 62 mph from rest in 4.5 seconds.
The X5 40d xDrive has a 3.0-litre diesel engine with two-stage turbocharging and a 48V mild hybrid system. It produces 670 Nm and uses up to 40.4 mpg on the WLTP cycle under EU6e rules. It will be retested to the EU7 standard before the UK launch. Dr Joachim Post, the BMW board member responsible for development, said the new X5 “benefits from the technologies in the Neue Klasse and the widest possible range of drive systems.”
BMW X5 design and interior
The exterior follows Neue Klasse design. It has a BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille, switchable double-X daytime running lights and BMW Winglet door handles. Electrically powered soft-close doors are optional. Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive combines a free-cut Central Display, BMW Panoramic Vision and a 3D Head-Up Display. The optional BMW Passenger Screen makes its debut in this model, and slate is offered as a decorative surface. A panoramic sunroof and adaptive suspension are standard. Buyers can choose from eleven paint colours and alloy wheels of up to 23 inches, with M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Performance models adding their own styling.

Price and launch in the UK
The X5 is built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States. In the UK, the BMW iX5 60 xDrive costs from £85 375 OTR, the X5 40d xDrive from £85 885 OTR and the X5 50e xDrive from £86 870 OTR. The UK market launch begins in spring 2027.
