Killarney International Raceway hosted the Killarney Time Attack on 25 and 26 September, run by MD Motorsport, a division of Master Drive. It is the first event of its kind on the African continent to carry an affiliation to the international Time Attack name, giving South African enthusiasts a controlled setting to test their cars against the clock.
Spectators attended in large numbers over both days, making it one of the best supported Time Attack events held at Killarney, and an indication that the discipline is growing in South Africa.
How the Killarney Time Attack works
Each driver tackled a dedicated 2.2 km point to point course alone, from a standing start, chasing the fastest time. Every tenth of a second counted, and the margins at the top were tight. Purpose built race cars shared the course with everyday performance cars, with the street car category crowning its own winner.
Killarney Time Attack results
Nian Du Toit took the King of Killarney title ahead of Silvio Scribante and Aldo Scribante, and the same three drivers finished in the same order in the King of Race Cars category.
Wayne Hoffman won King of Street Cars, with Willhelm Kunn second and Zac Laden third. In the King of Classics category, Franco Scribante won from Franco Donadio, with Silvio Scribante third.
Master Drive’s youngest Driver Search Program winner, Suhaa Jacobs, competed at 16 years old. Gino Nourse, General Manager of Coastal regions at Master Drive, said she “showed how much she has improved over the past few months”.
Master Drive on responsible performance driving
Master Drive CEO Eugene Herbert said the event goes beyond the results sheet. “As increasingly powerful and technologically advanced vehicles become accessible to everyday motorists, vehicle performance needs to match driver capability,” he said.
Herbert said a controlled event gives enthusiasts a legitimate place to explore the limits of their cars rather than testing those limits on public roads, and that MD Motorsport was developed with that objective.
Partners and next year’s event
The event was supported by partners including Castrol South Africa, the ROSE Foundation, Efficiency Sports and Marketing, Astron Killarney, Motus Ford Paarden Eiland, Valternative Energy, Scoot Up, DJI, Tracktion Experiences, WPMC and Mikes Place. Nourse said spectator support showed Time Attack has a strong future in South Africa, and Master Drive is looking ahead to next year’s event.
