Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs meet in the Soweto Derby on Saturday, 31 October, at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, and Suzuki Auto South Africa, the Buccaneers’ official vehicle partner, will be at the ground with a fan stand and a ticket competition. With Halloween falling on derby day, the date carries extra meaning for Pirates supporters, who are known as The Ghost.
Soweto Derby history and rivalry
Both clubs have their roots in Soweto. Founded in 1937, Orlando Pirates is one of the oldest football clubs in the country, while Kaizer Chiefs was founded in 1970 by former Pirates player Dr Kaizer Motaung. The two sides first met in 1971.
They typically play each other at least twice in a Betway Premiership season, and a meeting in the Carling Knockout Cup or Nedbank Cup can add another derby. Allegiance is often passed down through families, and the fixture is known for singing, dancing, flags and vuvuzelas.
Suzuki partnership with Orlando Pirates
The carmaker announced its two-year partnership with the club in July 2025, becoming Official Vehicle Partner and Official Premium Sleeve Partner. Since returning to the South African market in 2008, Suzuki has recorded 18 consecutive years of sales growth.
Founded in 1909 by Michio Suzuki as a loom-making business in Japan, the company built its first vehicle prototype by 1937 and launched the Suzulight in 1955. Its current range includes the Swift, Fronx and Jimny, along with motorcycles such as the Katana and Hayabusa.

At the Suzuki stand, fans can look at vehicles, try a reaction game for a chance to win prizes and use a selfie booth, with larger flags and giveaways also planned. “For Suzuki, it’s about more than having our name on a shirt; it’s about celebrating the passion supporters bring to the game,” said Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager at Suzuki Auto South Africa.
Derby kick-off and ticket competition
The match kicks off at 3.30pm. Five winners will each receive a pair of tickets and a Suzuki x Orlando Pirates hamper of co-branded merchandise. To enter, fans share a photo of their Orlando Pirates gear featuring the Suzuki logo in the comments on one of Suzuki Auto South Africa’s competition posts on Facebook, Instagram or X.
