Sales have opened in the United Kingdom for the revised Civic e:HEV from Honda, which adds the S+ Shift system first seen on the recently revealed Prelude sports coupe, an upgraded Sport grade, a new driver monitoring camera and a refreshed colour palette.
The hatchback keeps its e:HEV full hybrid powertrain, which draws on more than 25 years of hybrid engineering at the company and gives a driving range of up to 528 miles.
How Honda S+ Shift works in the Civic
Standard on the Advance and Sport grades, S+ Shift simulates the sound, feel and engagement of quick automatic gear changes. It builds on the existing Linear Shift Control by synchronising engine speed, vehicle speed and sound more closely, and it controls engine RPM and drive force during both acceleration and deceleration.
Active Sound Control amplifies engine sound and matches it to engine RPM to reinforce the sense of a gear change. The system uses a virtual eight-speed transmission, operated with the steering wheel paddles that otherwise adjust the level of regenerative braking. Downshifts bring a real engine braking effect and a rev-matching throttle blip.
Upgraded Civic Sport grade
Outside, the revised Sport is identified by a gloss black roof-mounted shark fin antenna. The cabin gains red stitching on the front seats, front centre armrest, front and rear door trims and steering wheel, along with red garnish around the front grille dashboard.
A 12-speaker BOSE Centrepoint sound system is now standard on this grade. It was developed jointly by sound engineers from Honda and BOSE.
Civic safety and colour changes
Every grade, namely Elegance, Sport and Advance, now has a driver monitoring camera mounted on the interior A-pillar. Part of the Honda SENSING suite of driver aids, it issues alerts to keep the driver’s attention on the road.
Meteoroid Gray Metallic joins the paint options as one of five premium colours, alongside Platinum White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Premium Crystal Red Metallic and Seabed Blue Pearl.
