ISIS members in South Africa
Four alleged ISIS facilitators based in South Africa has been sanctioned by the United States. The members, who are allegedly backing ISIS in Syria, Mozambique and Iraq, have been linked to recruitment, robberies, kidnapping and extortion.
According to the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, ISIS members and associates are playing an “increasingly central role” in South Africa as they are facilitating fund transfers from the top of the ISIS hierarchy to branches across Africa.
Thus, the US imposed sanctions in order to block these alleged ISIS backers from doing business with the US.
Eskom names the City of Ekurhuleni for the millions they owe
According to Eskom, the City of Ekurhuleni is top of the list when it comes to companies that owe the power station millions – with a reported R544 million debt.
However, the city argues that it has not missed any of its arranged payments, but Eskom says that the city failed to “honour an agreement” to fully settle the debt. As a result, the city has now been hit with hefty penalty fees on top of what is already owed.
And while Eskom continues with its campaign to get debtors to pay up, they are targeting other municipalities in Gauteng such as Emfuleni and the West Rand.
Massive fines can now be given to South Africans for wrongful social media posts and messages
Fines of up to R150 000 and even imprisonment can now be expected for those who challenge the new Films and Publications Amendment Act on social media.
And while the regulations primarily apply to the sale, hiring and streaming of content on various digital platforms, the Act is also introducing much stricter regulations around the distribution of online content in SA.
