Today’s Weather: Mostly clear skies with isolated coastal rain

South Africa wakes to a mostly bright late-winter Sunday, with clear skies over Johannesburg, Polokwane and much of the interior, while Cape Town sees partly cloudy conditions and Durban gets a touch of slight rain along the coast. Temperatures climb comfortably inland, reaching the mid to high twenties in Mbombela, Kimberley and Mahikeng, though Gqeberha stays cool and overcast between 13 and 16 degrees. Do take note of the extreme veld fire conditions flagged for parts of the country, along with several weather advisories in effect, so stay cautious with any open flames and keep an eye on updates from the South African Weather Service.

• Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions fires may develop and spread rapidly resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life.

All personnel and equipment should be removed from the field. Fire teams, labour and equipment are to be placed on full stand-by. At first sign of smoke, every possible measure should be taken in order to bring the fire under control in the shortest possible time. All available aircraft are to be called for without delay.

• Very cold, wet and windy conditions (with maximum temperatures below 10 °C) over the high-lying areas.
• Disruptive rainfall leading to possible localised flooding over the south-eastern parts of the Western Cape.
• Damaging interior winds as well as gale force winds along the south-west and south coast.
• Damaging waves (reaching 4.5 to 5.5 m in places).

The public and small stock farmers are advised to take the necessary precaution to ensure the safety and health of their animals during very cold days. Limit outdoor activities and keep warm.
