Bloodaxe is a new historical drama series from Michael Hirst, the creator of Vikings. Set in 927 AD, it follows the fight to succeed the ailing King Harald Fairhair of Norway. Erik Bloodaxe, the ruthless heir sworn to pagan ways, faces his younger brother Haakon, raised in Christian Wessex and backed by an English fleet. The cast includes Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett and Alina Tomnikov.
The teaser sets up a kingdom at war with itself, as Erik leans on his wife Gunnhild while her father, King Gorm of Denmark, plots to exploit Norway’s instability. Haakon is pressed to renounce his God to take the throne, and the season builds toward a siege on Erik’s stronghold. Frederick E. O. Toye directs. The series premieres on Prime Video on 20 January 2027.
