Independent testing has made the SHARK DMO the ninth BYD model to earn the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating since the brand entered the European passenger-car market in 2022. Earlier recipients include the DOLPHIN SURF, DOLPHIN, SEAL, SEAL U DM-i and SEALION 7.
The official report draws on an assessment carried out last year by Australasian safety organisation ANCAP, with additional evaluations by Euro NCAP. It notes good protection in the frontal-offset test and in the full-width rigid barrier and side barrier evaluations.
Euro NCAP scores for the BYD SHARK
The double cab achieved 82% for Adult Occupant and 86% for Child Occupant protection. Euro NCAP credited its protection of the 6- and 10-year-old dummies in the side barrier impact, along with a child presence detection system that warns when a child may have been left in the vehicle.
Autonomous emergency braking performed well with cyclists and responded well to motorcyclists, giving a 74% score for Vulnerable Road Users. Safety Assist came in at 87%, with credit for the AEB response to other vehicles, lane-departure support and a speed assistance system that can set the limiter automatically from identified local speed limits.
Super Hybrid DMO powertrain and range
Two electric motors drive the pick-up. The front unit produces 231PS and 310Nm, while the rear delivers 204PS and 340Nm, for a combined 436PS and 650Nm and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. A 32.2kWh Blade Battery, fitted into the ladder-frame platform using Cell-to-Chassis technology, works with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine to give a combined range of 419 miles on a full charge and a full tank.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li described it as a pick-up “capable as a workhorse, as comfortable as an SUV” and “efficient enough to drive up to 90km on electric power alone”.
Cabin and standard equipment
Seating five, the cabin has vegan-leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats and a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system. A 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and head-up display sit alongside a 15.6-inch infotainment screen with navigation, voice assistant and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also fitted are a 50W wireless charging pad, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, and Vehicle-to-Load through two onboard power sockets.
