Parents who drive their children to grassroots sport in the UK spend an average of £1 216 a year on fuel and cover some 1 716 miles doing so, according to a survey of 2 000 mums and dads commissioned by Chery UK. The same study found they spend an average of 3 hours 22 minutes a week chauffeuring their amateur athletes.

Football leads grassroots sport travel
Football emerged as the most-driven-to sport at 61%, followed by swimming at 40% and dance at 18%. The majority of parents, 78%, cover up to 49 miles a week getting their children to and from training, matches and competitions.
The commitment comes at a price. Nearly three-quarters (74%) said they had missed something important, such as social events, birthdays or work commitments, so their children could take part. Even so, 77% said they will miss it when it stops, and 72% believe the journeys have positively affected their relationship with their children. A further 91% agreed the benefits of sport go beyond physical health, with confidence (66%), teamwork (63%) and social skills (56%) the qualities most seen to improve.
Fuel costs and Chery electric range
When asked what would make sporting travel easier, 41% of parents pointed to lower fuel or charging costs, while good fuel economy (40%) topped the list of most-wanted vehicle features. RAC Fuel Watch figures showed diesel in the UK hit an all-time high of 199.18p/ litre at the end of September.
Farrell Hsu, Managing Director for Chery UK, noted how local this driving is, adding: “Our plug-in Chery Super Hybrid models offer between 56 and 91 miles of pure electric range depending on the vehicle, so for many families that whole week could be covered on electric power alone.”
