Geely Auto South Africa has announced the arrival of the all-new Coolray, adding a turbocharged petrol compact SUV to its local line-up and giving buyers another option in one of the country’s most competitive segments. Every derivative uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with a claimed combined fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 km.
The Coolray is Geely’s most widely exported SUV and is sold in markets across Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America. Jateen Daya, Head of Product & Strategy at Geely Auto South Africa, said the model “has proven itself globally as one of Geely’s most important products.” It joins a local portfolio that already includes fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and petrol models.

Coolray engine and performance
The four-cylinder direct-injection engine produces 128 kW at 5 500 rpm and 290 Nm of torque between 2 000 and 3 500 rpm. Drive goes to the front wheels through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, and Geely quotes a 0-100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds. Four driving modes are offered: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Adaptive.
Coolray dimensions, design and practicality
The Coolray measures 4 380 mm long, 1 795 mm wide and 1 609 mm high, rides on a 2 600 mm wheelbase and has 161 mm of ground clearance. Suspension uses MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, with electric power steering, ventilated front discs and rear discs. It seats five, and luggage space is 330 litres, rising to 1 054 litres with the rear seats folded.
Styling features a vertical-slat grille, LED headlamps and twin-pod LED taillamps. Vanguard and Vertex derivatives get a two-tone roof, while the flagship Vertex adds a rear wing with integrated side fins and “S” badging. Colour options are White, Grey, Silver, Green and Red.

Coolray technology and safety features
The cabin has a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range. Depending on specification, buyers also get wireless smartphone charging, multi-colour ambient lighting, power-adjustable seating, a panoramic sunroof and an electric tailgate. Standard safety equipment includes ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX anchor points.
Vanguard and Vertex models have six airbags and a 540-degree panoramic camera. The Vertex adds a Level 1 ADAS package with Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent High Beam Control and Traffic Jam Assist.

Coolray pricing in South Africa
Geely Auto South Africa did not include pricing in its announcement, so buyers interested in the Coolray will need to check with the company for derivative prices.
