New research commissioned by MG Motor UK points to a widening affordability gap in the family-car market, and the brand is using it to make the case for its seven-seat MGS9 PHEV. Combining a consumer survey by Opinion Matters with marketplace data from Autotrader, the study found that one in three drivers (34%) say new cars are much less affordable than ten years ago.

What UK drivers told the survey
Of the 2,000 UK drivers surveyed, 62% say new cars are less affordable than a decade ago, and 46% would love a new car but are held back by living costs or purchase prices. Purchase price (61%) and running costs (56%) lead buying priorities, ahead of manufacturer at 26%. Almost nine in ten (88%) would rethink at least one aspect of their next car to stay within budget, including 41% who would consider a different manufacturer.
Among those wanting a larger or seven-seat car, more boot space (31%) and family holidays or longer journeys (30%) were the main reasons, while 24% need room for extended family or friends.
MGS9 space, range and equipment
Luggage capacity is 332 litres with all seven seats in use, rising to 1,026 litres with the third row folded. The third row has room for adults. Its plug-in hybrid system combines petrol driving with up to 62 miles of electric-only WLTP range when fully charged.
Comfort models come with heated front seats, a panoramic roof, tri-zone climate control and a 360-degree reversing camera. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen is paired with physical buttons for key controls such as air conditioning.
MG on price and UK sales
Autotrader data shows 54% of new SUV stock in the UK is priced at £40 000 or above, against 92% of MG’s new SUV stock below that mark. Staying under £40 000 means the MGS9 PHEV range avoids the Expensive Car Supplement, worth £2 200 over five years at current rates. “Families should not need to pay a premium for a practical seven-seat SUV that works for daily life,” said David Allison, Director of Product and Planning at MG Motor UK.
In September, MG’s UK registrations grew 23.7% against a market rise of 12%, with a record 18,026 units making it the UK’s fourth best-selling brand that month.
