GWM South Africa has introduced an all-new generation of the Haval H7, replacing the current model with a boxier SUV offered in six derivatives across petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The range tops out with a Hi4 four-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid producing 280 kW and 670 N.m.

Haval H7 cabin and technology
Inside, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits alongside a 15.6-inch touchscreen with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coating, while a 9-inch head-up display projects speed, navigation and driver-assistance information. Voice control covers 17 functions. There is also a 50W wireless charger, a 10-speaker sound system and a panoramic sunroof that blocks 90.5% of UV radiation, fitted to every derivative.
Heated and ventilated front seats are standard throughout. Boot space measures 586 litres, growing to 1 404 litres with the rear seats folded, and a 220V outlet in the boot is rated at 400W on ICE and HEV models and up to 2.2kW on PHEV versions.
Engines and four-wheel-drive systems
The 2.0T petrol engine delivers 170 kW and 380 N.m through a nine-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, with the 4WD version reaching 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. A 1.5T HEV produces 182 kW and 540 N.m and claims 5.3 litres/100 km. Plug-in hybrids offer 240 kW and 540 N.m in 2WD form with 130 km of electric range, or 280 kW and 670 N.m in the Hi4, which uses a 150 kW rear motor and offers 115 km of electric range. Both PHEVs support V2L discharge of up to 6kW.
The petrol 4WD uses a BorgWarner Haldex system with nine drive modes and Off-Road Cruise, and both 4WD derivatives have a locking rear differential. Ground clearance is 210 mm, wading depth is 580 mm, and a full-size spare is standard.
Safety equipment on the H7
Six airbags are standard, along with a Level 2 driver-assistance suite using 13 sensors. It includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centring, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a 540-degree camera with a transparent-chassis view.
