Barbados-born racer Zane Maloney will drive for Nissan Formula E Team in Season 13 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the first season of the GEN4 era. The 23-year-old partners Oliver Rowland, the 2024/25 Drivers’ World Champion, and arrives with Formula E experience and race wins in junior categories, including Formula 2.
What the GEN4 car brings to Formula E
A new generation of car is expected to level the playing field, giving every team the chance of a fast start. Nissan is working through an extensive testing programme with its new machine, which Maloney described as “a big step up”, citing the active differential, permanent all-wheel drive, 600kW of power and more downforce than before.
He expects peloton-style racing to continue, though overtaking may become harder with all-wheel drive engaged at all times. Attack Mode previously gained much of its advantage from switching to all-wheel drive, so that benefit may shrink and teams will need fresh thinking on strategy. In the first race, he said, everyone will be learning, which makes early pace especially important.
Maloney on adapting to new tracks
Alongside a new team and car, the driver faces circuits new to Formula E. He sees his background across categories as a foundation, arguing that the ability to adjust to different cars, circuits and conditions will matter most in the opening races.
Some venues hold good memories. Maloney won his British F4 title at Brands Hatch and took a Formula 3 victory at Zandvoort, and he singled out COTA for its fast, flowing Sector 1.
Early targets and working with Oliver Rowland
Season 13 is set to feature 21 races, the longest campaign in the series’ history, so a strong start could help in all three championships. Maloney’s first priority is building a working relationship with the team and helping develop the GEN4 car. “The goal is to focus on getting our procedures right and then the results will come,” he said.
Rowland, the Season 11 World Champion and one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, is a resource the newcomer intends to use. Maloney called the pairing “a big opportunity” and said his teammate is very straightforward when it comes to developing the car. The team continues its testing programme ahead of the opening round.
