Chery has launched the Q, a compact, fully electric vehicle, in South Africa. The local launch event in the KZN Midlands tested the car’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external discharge function by using five Qs to power a cooking challenge for 26 guests in five teams.
The Q is powered by a 90 kW electric motor and a 42.7 kWh battery, and has a range of up to 400 km on the NEDC cycle.

Chery Q powers a cooking challenge
Teams drove the Q to local farm stalls and grocers to source ingredients, then cooked a three-course menu with blenders, microwaves and air fryers plugged directly into the vehicles. Dishes included chicken curry bunny chow, stew with chakalaka and pap, and peri-peri chicken livers. After three hours, the battery level across all five vehicles remained above 80%.
The judging panel included chef Peter Goffe-Wood, a four-season MasterChef South Africa judge and Ultimate Braai Master judge. “Cooking with power supplied by a car puts a whole new meaning to padkos,” he said.
Vehicle-to-Load capacity and practicality
The Q’s V2L system delivers up to 6.6 kW, enough to run multiple high-draw household appliances, power tools and camping gear, or provide light emergency backup power for a home.
Boot capacity is 375 litres, expanding to 1 450 litres. A separate 70-litre front trunk doubles as a cooler box and has valve drainage to make it easier to clean.
Chery Q cabin and design
The cabin has a 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch instrument display, with customisable wallpapers, an interactive digital pet, quick gestures and a customisable home-screen layout. The Q has received a Red Dot Product Design Award, and Chery describes its design as “Square-Round Harmony”, combining squared proportions with softer, rounded details.

Chery Q price in South Africa
