Members of the public in South Africa can now submit designs for the official cap of the 100th Comrades Marathon, through a competition run by Toyota South Africa Motors called The Greatest Cap Ever Worn. The winning design will be included in every participant’s race pack for the centenary race in 2027.
The race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban celebrates its centenary under the theme The Greatest Story Ever Run. With approximately 28 000 runners expected, the chosen cap will be worn by participants from South Africa and around the world.
Toyota and the Comrades Marathon
For more than two decades, the carmaker has been the official vehicle and mobility sponsor of the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon. Its fleet covers lead vehicles, race officials, medical support and logistics teams along the route, while the red-and-white Toyota Last Mile marks the final stretch.
For many runners, the annual cap is a memento of months of preparation and of crossing the finish line. “We wanted to create an opportunity for South Africans to leave their own mark on its history,” said Tasneem Lorgat, General Manager: Marketing Communications at Toyota South Africa Motors.
Prizes for the winning cap design
The winner receives a VIP Comrades Marathon hospitality experience, travel or flights to Durban, one night’s accommodation and an invitation to the Comrades sponsor and partner dinner. Also included are an entry into the Comrades Marathon Toyota Win-A-Car lucky draw and a wearable technology prize package valued at R11 500.
Rounding off the package, the winning design will be mounted on a display and signed by Comrades champion Gerda Steyn, an ambassador for Global Team Toyota Athlete.
