The lower weekend demand has made it possible to suspend load shedding from midnight until Monday.

Eskom will continue its current rotation of stage 3 and 4 load shedding before reducing to stage 2 on Friday morning.

The accused facing charges from alleged irregular contracts granted for the building of Kusile Power Stations valued at over R2 billion.

Stage 4 will last until 5am on Monday, with the power utility alternating stage 3 and 4 until Wednesday morning.

This comes after failure of two units occurred at a power station during the course of Wednesday evening.

This was necessary due to breakdowns of five generators at five power stations, said Eskom.

As of the start of this week, the country has experienced 1,949 hours (81 days) of national load shedding in 2022.

The extended load shedding is required due to shortage of generation capacity as a result of high levels of breakdowns.

At stage 8 load shedding the outages would last anywhere between 12 and 16 hours.

The utility is struggling with one of its power stations, resulting in three units being shut down, with four units coming offline shortly.

Unless South Africa aggressively invests in renewable energy and relaxes air quality, Eskom might need to implement stage 15 load shedding.

Eskom is short of the skills it needs, particularly in engineering and the electricity supply industry.

People with experience in running power stations are being brought back to help with the plant operation, management and mentorship.
